RAYNET and 4x4 Response

Voluntary co-operation brings benefits of Amateur Radio to the Public.

Collaboration between amateur radio enthusiasts and four-wheel drive vehicle owners has been bringing benefits to the public for decades. Often unseen and unsung, members of 4x4 Response respond to calls 24 hours a day, assisting the emergency services, local councils and the public in extreme weather conditions and disaster scenarios. Whether it’s blizzards or floods, city centre or mountain crag, their well-equipped, highly-capable vehicles are ready to assist. The experienced drivers are well-trained and provide their services on an entirely voluntary basis.

There are 4x4 Response local groups throughout the UK, coordinated by the National 4x4 Response Network. The groups are ready to help with all kinds of emergencies, providing emergency assistance to ambulance crews, transport of essential personnel, delivery of essential medical supplies and search and rescue. It’s not just about emergencies, though. The groups also provide support for charity events, equestrian meetings and more.

Good, reliable communications are an essential component, supporting 4x4 Response drivers in coordinating their response and communicating with each other, emergency services and event organizers. Even in the modern world of mobile phones, coverage is far from universal. Some of the harshest environments have patchy coverage at best. Even in locations that are well-covered, service cannot be guaranteed.

Fortunately,

There is a solution to these shortcomings – Amateur Radio. Since 1953, an organization called RAYNET (Radio Amateurs Emergency Network) has existed to provide communications that are entirely independent of existing infrastructure.

RAYNET is the UK voluntary communications service and it is provided entirely by licensed Radio Amateurs. Using a range of radio bands and specialized equipment, these radio experts can provide point-to-point or centralized communication facilities, over both short and long distances. In addition, many 4x4 Response drivers are themselves licensed Radio Amateurs. Communication support is also provided by local Amateur Radio Societies such as M0OCT. Both RAYNET and local radio groups provide support for local community events as well as for emergencies.

Are you a Radio Amateur or 4x4 owner? Then Why not join a local group and enjoy the satisfaction of making your own contribution, and at the same time enjoy the companionship and team spirit of like-minded people. Even if you are not yet a licensed Radio Amateur, you can still get involved, and benefit from bespoke training from Amateur Radio Societies like M0OCT. www.m0oct.com

North East Derbyshire RAYNET has been assisted on a number of occasions by Members of  M0OCT ARS. Find more details on the Info page at www.nederbyshireraynet.org.uk
